About Reputable Contractors Near Me

Why this exists

Most contractor directories are advertising businesses wearing a directory's clothes. You search for an electrician, and what comes back is whoever paid the most that month — with the licensed, well-reviewed electrician two streets away nowhere on the page because they never bought a listing.

We built this the other way round.

Every licensed contractor in our coverage area is listed here, free, whether they have ever given us a penny or not. No contractor can pay to have a competitor hidden. No contractor can pay to be called "verified." Paying changes how visible a listing is — never whether it exists, and never what our data says about it.

What our badges mean — and what they can never be

Trust badges on this site come from public records. They are not for sale, at any price, to anyone.

Badge Where it comes from
Licence number The relevant Massachusetts licensing board's public register
Licence status — Active, Expired, Suspended, Revoked The same public register, as at the verification date shown
Years active Registration or incorporation date on public record
Certifications Issuing body's own published list (e.g. Certified Arborist, GAF Master Elite)

If a contractor's licence has lapsed, this site will say so on their listing — including on a contractor who is paying us. That is the whole point. A badge that can be bought tells you nothing, and a directory that quietly hides bad news about paying customers is just an advertising channel with better manners.

"Licensed" doesn't mean one thing

Worth understanding, because it affects how you read these listings. Massachusetts issues electrical, plumbing, gas, HVAC and sprinkler licences to individuals, not to companies. Only Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration is held at business level. Some trades — kitchen design among them — have no state licence at all, only voluntary certification.

So a badge on an electrical listing refers to a licensed individual at that business. A badge on a general contractor refers to the company's HIC registration. Where a trade has no licence to hold, we show certifications instead and say so plainly, rather than inventing a credential to fill the space.

How we make money

Openly, and in one way at a time.

Featured listings. A contractor can pay for greater visibility — a higher position, a highlighted card. Every one of these is labelled "Sponsored" or "Featured" where you see it. Same fee and same eligibility rules for everyone: no negotiated rates, no exceptions for people we know.

What money does not buy: a trust badge, a better licence status, removal of an unfavourable fact, or the suppression of a competitor's free listing.

If we add other revenue later — lead generation, or advertising — it will be labelled just as plainly, and this page will be updated before it goes live rather than after.

Where the data comes from

Public licensing registers, official certification bodies, and contractors' own published business details. We verify what we can and date-stamp it, so you can see how fresh a check is rather than trusting an undated tick.

We are not infallible. Registers lag, businesses move, and a licence can change status the day after we look. Always confirm a licence directly with the issuing board before signing a contract or paying a deposit. Our badges are a starting point for your own diligence, not a substitute for it.

Found something wrong on a listing — yours or someone else's? Tell us and we will check it against the public record and correct it.

Disclosure

This directory is run by Eddie Newton, who also works as a kitchen designer at a Massachusetts building supply company and is a partner in Final Touch Finishing Co. Businesses connected to those roles — including Final Touch Finishing Co. and family-connected businesses — may appear in this directory, and may pay for Featured placement. When they do, they pay the standard fee, meet the standard eligibility rules, and are labelled "Sponsored" exactly like anyone else. Their trust badges are generated from the same public records as everyone else's, and receive no adjustment of any kind.

We would rather tell you this plainly on the About page than have you discover it and wonder what else we left out.

Coverage

We are starting on the North Shore of Massachusetts, around Gloucester and Cape Ann, and expanding trade by trade and region by region. A contractor listed here who serves your town may also serve well beyond it — check the service area on each listing.

Are you a contractor who isn't listed? You should be, and it costs nothing. Get in touch and we will add you from the public record.
